Therapy Roadmap

a Step-By-Step guide to the therapy process

#1 - Phone Screening

The first step in the speech therapy process is a brief 10–15 minute phone call with the speech-language pathologist (SLP). During this conversation, the SLP will listen to your concerns, ask questions, and determine whether a formal speech evaluation is appropriate.

If your child has had a speech evaluation within the past 12 months, this step may be skipped.

#2 - Evaluation

If the speech therapist and child's parents decide to move forward after the phone screening, the next step is to complete a full speech and language evaluation. This is usually 1.5-2 hours and helps us understand how your child is communicating and whether speech therapy could be helpful.

If your child has had a speech evaluation within the past 12 months, this step may be skipped.

#3 - Plan of Care Meeting

After the evaluation, the speech therapist will meet with the child's parents to share the results and answer questions. If appropriate, the speech therapist will also introduce a recommended plan of care, which will include session duration, frequency, and communication goals that are most important for your child.

Plans of care can be adjusted at any time. Most often, they are updated every 6-months to reflect progress and update goals to address any new areas of need.

#4 - Therapy

Therapy will begin and follow the plan of care. After each session, you'll be sent a session note so you can stay up-to-date about your child’s progress. These notes can also be used for insurance reimbursement. Superbills are available upon request.

#5 - Dismissal

Our ultimate goal is to help children become confident, independent, and functional communicators.
Therapy typically ends when the speech therapist, family, and child all feel that this goal has been met.
However, you are welcome to pause or stop therapy at any time.
